Session Four

Road Sign's - Nuclear Power Plant warning sign

I wanted to create a road sign that would be instantly eye catching, and instantly recognisable to drivers travelling at high speeds. I stuck with the traditional triangle used for most warning signs. I used yellow black and red as the colour scheme because all of these colours contrast well with one and other. The yellow triangle with red boarder creates a really bold striking image, and then the black Power Plant logo really stands out on the yellow background of the triangle.

Main Brief

This is the images of the existing Teme valley tour leaflet, very out dated, and in need of a re-vamp. The differences i would make to this design are the rectangle images and text, i find this very boring and bland. I will incorporate shape, be it circles or triangles.

Session Three

 "From Farm to Supermarket"

I struggled to find any information or previous Info Graphics on this topic, this suggested that most companies did not want us to know what there Food Miles were. Eventually i found a site with some information on which was the stats i used when creating my Info Graphic.
I created my info graphics with the mind set of simply breaking down the information and displaying clearly the distances in which the different types of foods travelled. The stats i found were as followed :
Apple’s – 1,555
Carrots – 1,774
Potatoes – 1,239
Pumpkins – 233
Strawberries – 1,093
Tomatoes – 1,369
Chicken – 2,870

ISB Designs

Session 2

Three different design from ISB, why they are effective and what info they are putting across? – Information is Beautiful

This info graphics although on a morbid subject was one i found to be very inspiring and influential, the colour scheme was something i found particularly interesting. The main thing though was the way the info was broken down, on paper this would an awful amount of text graphs and collated information, however the way the designer has separated the information into circles with smaller ones leading off, creates a really simple but highly effective way of showcasing the needed data.

This info graphic was one i found incredibly interesting, the that i found most enjoyable about it was the way the designer had created such a simplistic (might not look it, but it is) info graphic out of some very confusing in depth information. The very clean cut lines that represent the time line work fantastic against the background, and are easy to navigate as the lines are either a different style or colour depending what they are representing.

Break down of what species can catch and who carries certain types of flu viruses. This info Graphic works well because the use of overlaying circles with different levels of transparency, easily allows the reader to see which species can catch and carry the specified viruses.

Notes
Information diagrams
Graphs, Glance Boxes, Maps, Diagrams and sequences.

Graphs, statistical data relationships between different types of data.
Joseph Minard -  2 colours in 1869

 Maps

A lot of colour used to show different levels and routes, different style of line to show e.g. rivers, roads foot paths etc.
Contour lines to show height and depth.
Audience for maps is usually adults very rarely children.

This info graphic from film inception is very inspirational to me because i think the design is fantastic. The black background with the bright vivd colours on top works brilliantly, and creates a very clear easy to study design.

Harry Beck

Harry Beck

Henry Charles Beck, known as Harry Beck, was an English technical draftsman best known for creating the present London Underground Tube map in 1931. Beck drew up the diagram in his spare time while working as an engineering draftsman at the London Underground Signals Office. London Underground was initially skeptical of Beck's radical proposal, an uncommissioned spare-time project, but tentatively introduced it to the public in a small pamphlet in1933. It was immediately popular, and the Underground has used topological maps to illustrate the network ever since.

Late 1920’s George Dow created a number of maps like the one above, which is where a lot of speculation comes from that Harry Becks London Underground map was inspired by Dows work.

Becks theory was that he believed that passengers riding the Underground were not too bothered about geographical accuracy, and were more interested in how to get from one station to another and where to change trains. Which is why he came up with the concept of electrical schematic system rather that a usual map as he believed it was easier to navigate.
